Jiu jitsu remains one of the most effective self defence systems around. While learning to defend yourself and family you will learn to remain calm under pressure at school and at work. Setting and reaching your goals will build confidence and drive you to set new ones with courage and resolve. Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu is an art of self-defense. The word “Jiu-jitsu” means “the gentle art” and “the art of gaining victory by yielding or pliancy”.

Jiu-Jitsu was developed in feudal Japan by Samurai practitioners who needed to defend themselves when unarmed. In addition to defensive techniques against punching, kicking and weapons attacks, traditional Jiu-Jitsu teaches rolling, falling, hold escapes, throwing, grappling, strikes, and locks. It also aids in the development of balance, leverage, co-ordination, speed and of course personal confidence.

Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu focuses on being aware of and protecting one’s self through the idea that the element of surprise can mean the difference between success and failure to defend against an attack. Differences in size, weight, height and reach soon mean nothing as the martial art acts to even the odds and make it accessible to both genders, no matter their size.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu is learning to recognize a potentially volatile situation and diffuse it before it turns hostile. Preventive measures that make using hand to hand defense a last resort.

Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu carries with it the attitude that you should never have to raise your hands in violence. However, if it should ever be necessary to physically defend yourself, you’ll know what to do and use only as much force as necessary to nullify the situation.

Students who are learning Jiu-Jitsu are exposed to a high level of discipline that includes observing dojo rules and etiquette.
